Championships, 09/26/99

Orioles 4 Phillies 1, Game 1
In a great Championship game, the Orioles used a three run fourth inning to beat the Phillies 4-1. This was a pitchers duel with two great defensive teams. Here is the boxscore:

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Runs Hits Errs
Phillies 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 6 1
Orioles 1 0 0 3 0 0 X 4 7 1

Will Lessard pitched another wonderful game for during the Oriole playoff run going the distance allowing 6 hits, striking out 12 and not allowing a walk. All this after Will pulled a groin early in the game. The Orioles scored their 3 in the fourth on a Bob Galvani walk, a Brendan Doyle RBI single, a Tom Galvani walk, a Bunky Smith walk and a 2RBI single by Barry Bennett. The other five Oriole hits came from Tom Galvani, Rob Gray, 2 from Dick Scullary and Larry Olerich.

The Phillies made two great defensive plays in this contest, Bill Hoover making a diving play at third and Muntz making a diving catch in center. Pat Chieffalo pitched a great game holding the Orioles to just seven hits with three strike outs and four walks. The Phillie hits came from Gibbons, Rogers, Dailey, Martinis, Meader and Chieffalo.

Orioles 9 Phillies 8, Game 2
In another classic Championship game, the Orioles overcame a first inning 4 run deficit to win a nailbiter 9-8. Here is the boxscore:

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Runs
Orioles 1 3 0 0 4 1 0 9
Phillies 5 0 0 1 1 1 0 8

Both starters had a tough time in this one as the Phillies scored five times in the first inning. Wally Siggins started for the Os and did not get out of the first. The Phillies took advantage of two hits that Oriole outfielders lost in the sun. Bill Hoover had a RBI double, Greg Dailey had a 2 RBI single and Craig Bagley added a run scoring single in the five run uprising. Steve Saracino came in for a long relief stint and pitched great for the Orioles. Will Lessard then came in to close the game. On this one day, Will collected a win in game 1 and the save in game 2.

Coming off the strong outing in game 1, Pat Chieffalo started game two and gave up 1 run in the first inning and then could not get out of the second as the Orioles scored 3 times to close the early Phillie lead to 5-4. Steve Saracino had a huge 2 RBI double and Dick Scullary added a run scoring single. Bill Hoover came in for the Phillies and pitched well.

The Orioles scored 4 times in the fifth to take their first lead of the game at 8-6. After the Phillies scored in the bottom of the fifth, the Orioles scored the game winner in the top of the sixth. The Phillies fought hard and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run game. However, The Orioles held on to win the League Championship for the fourth time in the sixth years the League has been playing!

Round 2, 09/19/99

Orioles 9 Brewers 3
The Orioles beat the Brew Crew 9-3. Will Lessard pitch a fantastic game, throwing 6 no hit innings for the win. Will stuck out 9 and walked 2. Rob Gray pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th before the Brewers scored three meaningless runs off Wally Siggins in the ninth. Key hits for the Orioles include a Tom Galvani two run triple in the first, Barry Bennett two run double in the fourth and Mark Stickney collecting two doubles. Brendan Doyle has a great day in center with a diving catch and another outfield assist at home. Brendan threw out at least four runners at the plate this season.

Phillies 9 Cubs 5
The Phillies ended the Cubs two season reign as National League Champions by winning a hard fought game by the score of 9-5 in the National League Championship game. The score was 6-5 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when the Phillies hit back to back homers to pretty much end the game.

The Phillies used four pitchers to shut down the Cubs attack. Pat Chiefallo continued to be the Phillies ace going four innings. He was followed by Demian Gage, Rick Huckins and Greg Dailey who closed the door in the eighth and ninth.

The Phillies played flawless defense by not committing a single error. That could have very well been the difference as the Cubs made 4 errors. There weren't many outstanding plays by the Phillies but they were solid. One of the better plays was turned in by Bill Hoover who snared a line shot at third base.

The Phillies offense was paced by three homers which scored 5 of the 9 runs. Gibbons and Mark Rogers hit two run homers and Greg Dailey added a solo shot right after the Rogers blast. The Phillies got support from their entire lineup as Soares added two singles and F Martinis reached safely twice too. The Phillies scored 6 runs with two outs, so they had several clutch hits.

For the Cubs, Tom Barnes pitched very well, striking out 8 and walking none in eight innings of work. However, the Phillies scored 3 runs in the third and three in the eighth with two outs. Tom was not helped much defensively as a couple errors and misplays helped the Phillies score some of the runs. Tom had an awesome season for the Cubs as he pitched half of all the innings the team pitched.

The Cubs defense had some shaky moments, but some great plays were also made. Dan Gould made two terrific over the shoulder catches in left field. On the second one, he managed to throw a strike back to Pete DiNatale who threw another bullet to Bryon Withers to almost nail a runner trying to tag from third.

Offensively, the Cubs were led by Bob Zeleznik with a double and single, Tom Jette with 2 singles and 2 RBIs, Andy Luckhardt with a single 1 RBI and 1 run scored and Dan Gould and Pete DiNatale who both doubled and scored a run.

The Phillies suffered a major setback during the game when their second pitcher Demian Gage broke his arm while throwing a pitch. We all wish a speedy recovery for Demian.

Cubs 13 Cardinals 3
The Cardinals number one pitcher, Murphy, couldn't make the game on time and it cost the Cardinals dearly. The first seven Cubs to bat all walked and scored in the first inning. After that it was a pretty tough game. The Cardinals third baseman Silvia made a great diving play to snare a grounder in the seventh inning.

The Cubs pitching was dominant as Tom Barnes went 5 innings allowing 2 hits and no earned runs and Bryon Withers went two more innings without allowing a hit. The Cubs made some great defensive plays as Brian Donnelly made a diving catch of a sinking liner in left field and Bill Keville completed a sweet double play picking up a grounder at second, stepping on the bag and throwing on to first.

The Cubs offense pounded out 15 hits as Pete DiNatale, Bryon Withers, John Sudkin, Brian Donnelly, Andy Schultz and Rich Schwarz collected two hits a piece. Dan Gould scored three runs.

The Cubs will travel to Stevens Park to take on the Phillies in the next round of the playoffs on 9/19/99 at 10AM.
