Recap
The National League division of the MetroWest Adult Baseball League held off a late charge from the American League to win their second summer classic in a row, 9-6, Thursday, June 29 at Ashland under the lights.

The top four batters in the National League order did the major damage. Christo Lagos (2-for-3, 2 doubles), Dave Devellis (1-for-2, 2 walks), Eddie Murray (3-for-3, double, walk, 3 RBI), and Matt Sandock (2-for-3) all combined for a total of 8 hits in 11 at-bats.

The Nationals struck for five runs in the first off American League starter John Gatti, who was victimized by lack of defensive support. Three more National runs crossed in the third before Mitch Williams settled in for a strong fourth inning.

The Americans battled back with three runs in the fifth sparked by a key single by Steve Slowik of the Ashland Red Sox to make the score 8-4. In the eighth the gap closed to 8-6 after another clutch hit from Slowik.

Strong pitching in the middle innings by Bob Solat and Jeff Stiles kept the Americans in the game. But the Nationals countered with a run in the top of the ninth off Steve Saraceno of the Red Sox, who is fighting a courageous battle with obesity this year. The inning also featured perhaps the least contested rundown in the history of baseball, with Eddie Murray looking like an Easter Island statue installed between third and home.

Matt Finnegan set the Americans down quietly in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the 9-6 victory.

“A fun and friendly night for all concerned,” said losing American League coach Saraceno, munching on a pork chop afterwards. “Some may win, and some may lose. But one thing is for certain: I’m going to have lunch tomorrow.”
