Dave Prybyla allowed four hits in seven innings of work and Jeff Stiles finished off with two solid
innings as the Marlborough Indians beat the Holliston Mariners, 12-2, and gained a split of their
season series.
Prybyla yielded one run, struck out seven and walked two as the Indians clinched a playoff berth.
After giving up one hit in each of the first four innings, Prybyla settled down and retired the
last nine batters he faced. Stiles allowed two hits and one run, striking out three.
The Indians rapped 18 hits, with Prybyla (triple, three singles, four RBIs) and Stiles (3-for-4,
four runs scored) leading the attack. Hugh Cornwell added three hits and Mike Giordano ripped a
triple and a single, knocking home two. Randy Pina and Markian Stecyk also had a pair of RBIs each
for the Tribe (6-10).
Mike Howell had two hits for the M’s, while Chris Shea doubled and scored a run.

Indians 9 Yankees 7 and Indians 4 Yankees 0
Behind the hitting of Tom Pare (two homers, two doubles, six RBIs) and the pitching of Mike
Richards (a save and a win), the Marlborough Indians swept a pair of hard-fought games from
the Sudbury Yankees at Feeley Field.
Game One: Indians 9, Yankees 7
Pare’s second bomb of the game in the top of the seventh provided the difference as the
Indians fended off a furious Yankees rally to hang on for the 9-7 win.
Craig Macauley went six solid innings for the Indians before hitting Scott Matey with the first
pitch of the final frame. Richards entered and yielded a single to Chris Palante that moved
Matey to third. The Indians’ hurler then coaxed a ground out, with Matey scoring to make it 9-7.
He retired the next two batters on a fly out and a fielder’s choice to preserve the win and earn
his second save of the season.
Macauley scattered 11 hits, walked 1 and struck out 6 for his first win of the season.
The Indians took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Pare’s first homer, a high, booming three-run
shot that easily cleared the fence in left-center field.
The Yankees got one back in the bottom half when Mike Colombo singled, went all the way around to
third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
In the second, the Indians’ Mike Giordano singled with one out, stole second, went to third on
an error, and scored on a passed ball. The Tribe made it 6-1 when Pare and Hugh Cornwell ripped
back-to-back doubles and Dave Laliberte singled Cornwell home.
The Yankees pitcher shut the Indians down for the next three innings as his club clawed its way
back into the game. In the fourth, Colombo reached on an error, Matey singled, and Palante doubled
them both home. Singles by Paul Valentino and Brian Cassidy tacked on the third run and it was 6-4.
Indians third baseman Mike Togneri started a 5-3 double play to end the inning and avoid further
damage.
In the fifth, the Yankees’ Mitch Williams led off with a single and Kevin Moran followed with an
RBI double off the base of the fence in left-center. Moran scored two out later on a single by
Jim Gillon that tied the game at 6-6.
In the Indians’ seventh, Jerry Guerra singled leading off and stole second. Pare then drove an
0-1 pitch on a line over the fence in left field. The Indians added another insurance run when
Steve Courtwright doubled and scored on a two-out Laliberte single.
Game Two: Indians 4, Yankees 0
Richards kept on pitching, starting the second game and allowing only two hits in a seven-inning
complete game win. He walked four and struck out four. Both Yankee hits came with two outs in the
sixth as Gillon and Joe Dervin singled back-to-back. But Richards worked a grounder to short and
the threat was over.
The Indians got all the runs they would need in the first. With one out, Guerra singled and stole
second. Pare followed with an RBI double and later scored on a Cornwell single. Pinch-runner
Mike Giordano then stole second and scored on a Togneri single.
The Tribe’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Cornwell singled leading off. Pinch-runner
Pare stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Laliberte’s double-play grounder.
The Yankees second game pitcher threw a strong game, walking no one and limiting the Indians to
eight hits.
With the wins, the Indians improved to 5-8 and held on to a share of second place in the American
Division. The Yankees dropped to 1-10 and remain tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the
division.

Week 14, 07/23/06
Orioles 3 Indians 1
Behind the seven-hit, complete-game performance of Steve Simoes, the Framingham Orioles
edged the Marlborough Indians, 3-1, in a well-played game on both sides. Jeff Merzel had
two hits, including an RBI double, and Bob Galvani singled twice and scored both times to
pace the O’s offense.
Mike Togneri had two hits for the Indians, who scored their only run in the first inning on
consecutive two-out singles by Jeff Stiles, Dave Prybyla, and Hugh Cornwell.
Prybyla pitched well for the Indians, allowing only five hits, striking out five and walking six.
He also went the full nine.
Simoes struck out eight and walked only one in his second complete-game win over the Tribe this
year. In their two games against Simoes, the Indians scored three combined runs in the first
inning and only one total in the other 16 innings.
After the Indians took their 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the O’s responded with a run
in the top of the second. Tom Galvani and Barry Bennett walked. Dick Scullary laid down a sacrifice
bunt and Dave Bieksha grounded out to plate Galvani.
The Orioles went up 2-1 in the third. With one out, Bob Galvani and Merzel singled. Galvani took
third on a fly out and scored on a double steal, with Merzel thrown out by Indians catcher Steve
Courtwright on the play.
Bob Galvani (single) and Merzel (booming two-strike double to center) teamed up again in the
fifth to make it 3-1.
The Indians threatened in the eighth on singles by Courtwright and Togneri, putting runners at
first and third with no one out. But Simoes got the next batter looking and Merzel threw out
Togneri trying to steal. When Simoes knocked down Markian Stecyk’s hard grounder back to the
hill, retrieved the ball and nipped Stecyk at first, Courtwright was stranded and the O’s
preserved their two-run lead.
The Indians put a runner on second in the ninth when Jerry Guerra beat out a dribbler and went
to second on the overthrow – the game’s only error. But Simoes induced a ground out and a strikeout
to end the game.
The O’s improved to 8-1 and now lead the American Division by six full games over the Indians and Red Sox (both 3-8). The Indians have lost four games by a combined five runs to the Orioles, Cardinals, Phillies, and Cubs (who have a combined record of 33-7).

Cubs 14 Indians 13
Eddie Murray’s laser throw from right field cut down the tying run at the plate in the top of the
ninth as the Southborough Cubs edged the Marlborough Indians, 14-13, at steamy Mooney Field. Dennis
Fontecchio and Luis Tiant, Jr., had RBI hits in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cubs their final
lead in the back-and-forth affair.
With one out in the Indians’ ninth, Dave Laliberte singled up the middle. Aging Baby Boomer Jerry
Guerra pinch ran and, going on the pitch, barely beat Murray’s throw to third on a single to right
by Mike Giordano. Giordano went to second on the throw.
Craig Macauley then hit a line drive to medium right field that Murray snagged. Murray’s throw was
perfect and Guerra, the self-proclaimed “fastest guy on the team,” was out by at least 10 feet to end
the game.
Neither team showed any quit, as both rallied from significant deficits. The Cubs (6-2) took a 2-0
lead on hits by Fontecchio and Tiant, coupled with some shoddy Indians’ D.
The Indians (3-7) cut the deficit in half in the fourth. Mike Richards walked, stole second, went
to third on a grounder and scored on Tom Pare’s sacrifice fly.
The Cubs added three more runs in the third. Paul Sonnett and Brad Adams singled and were driven
home on a double by Tim Shaver (4-for-4 with 4 RBIs). Shaver later scored on a ground out and it
was 5-1.
The Indians got two back in the sixth, cutting the Cubs’ lead to 5-3. Markian Stecyk and Mike
Togneri singled and scored on a two-out double by Guerra.
The Cubs scored once in the bottom of the inning with Fontecchio (double) and Tiant (RBI single)
teaming up again to make it 6-3.
The Tribe scored six times in the sixth with the benefit of only two hits. Five walks, a gift double
by Jeff Stiles and a Togneri RBI single gave the Indians a 9-6 lead. Togneri had three of the
Indians’ 13 hits.
The Cubs cut it to 9-8 with two in the bottom of the sixth. Doubles by Ken Hamm and Chris Ricker and
a single by Shaver were the key blows.
The Indians tacked on four more in the seventh. An error, two walks, a hit batsman, and singles by
Steve Courtwright and Pare gave the Indians a 13-8 advantage.
The Cubs edged closer with four runs in the seventh. Rich Schwarz led off with a single and after
the next two batters were retired, the Cubs got consecutive singles from Murray, Sonnett, Hamm,
Adams, and Shaver to cut the Tribe lead to 13-12.
Ricker singled leading off the Cubs’ eighth, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Guerra
made a sliding catch of Rich Schwarz’s fly to shallow left to preserve the lead temporarily. But
Fontecchio tied the game with a single and Tiant followed with the game-winning double.
Schultz got the win for the Cubs with two innings of shutout relief. Tom Barnes started for the Cubs
and pitched well until tiring in the sixth. The temperature by that time was well into the 90s.
Mike Richards suffered the defeat for the Indians, who lost starter Jack Buchanan in the second
inning. Buchanan broke the middle finger of his pitching hand trying to field a one-hopper and
will be lost indefinitely, a huge blow to the Indians pitching staff and dugout banter.
Stiles pitched well in emergency relief, but was victimized by a handful of poor plays in the field
and some well-placed, well-time hits by the Cubs. Norm Lallier sparkled in the infield for
Marlborough, robbing Barnes and Fontecchio of hits in consecutive innings.
The teams combined for 36 hits, 23 of those by the Cubs. Eight of the Cubs’ 11 batters had at least
two hits. In their two games this year, both won by the Cubs, the teams scored a combined 61 runs.

Week 12, 07/09/06
Indians 10 Cardinals 4
The Anywhere-But-Marlborough Indians improved their road record to 3-1 with a 10-4 victory over
the Hudson Cardinals at Sauta Field.
Dave Prybyla was outstanding on the hill, getting the complete-game win for the Tribe (3-6 overall).
Prybyla, who got the tough-luck loss in the Cards’ 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Indians in
May, allowed eight hits, struck out eight and walked no one.
Steve Courtwright, Markian Stecyk and Mike Togneri led the Indians’ offensive attack with two hits
each. Jack Buchanan added two RBIs for the Indians and Hugh Cornwell (double) and Jeff Stiles (triple)
had booming extra base hits as well.
The Cards, who dropped to 7-2, were led by Matt Finnegan (triple, RBI single), Randy Pina (double,
single, two RBIs), and Ray Sullivan (two singles, run scored). Jeremy Ames did a nice job in relief
as well for Hudson, keeping his club in the game until the final inning.
The Indians scored two in the first and one in the third before taking control with a four-run
fourth. The Cards closed the gap with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and the game stayed
close until the Indians gained some breathing room with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Despite their vastly different records, both the Indians and the Cardinals are alone in second
place in their respective divisions.
With only one home game remaining – against the league champion Orioles on July 23 – the Indians
face the prospect of going winless at Marlborough’s Bauks Field. Due to scheduling quirks and
rainouts, the Indians will play only 6 of their 18 games at home this season…not a bad thing for
the Tribe considering their recent results at home.

Cardinals 14 Braves 3
Starting Cardinal pitcher Matt Finnegan went 6 innings (8 K, 2 Runs, 0 Earned, 4 BB) for the win
upping his personal record to 2-0. A two out six run Cardinal first inning rally proved to be
enough as Finnegan kept the potent Braves' bats at bay scattering five hits.
Rookie Cardinal Jeremy Ames took over in the seventh and watched JL Lagos (1-2, 2 BB, are there
more Lagos than Galvanis now?) tear the cover off of his first offering in a shot tracked and
successfully shot down by NORAD. Jeremy settled in and allowed no further hits, nor runs
preserving the win upping the Card's record to 5-1.
Ray Sullivan led the Cardinal hit parade going 4-4 with a triple.

Steve Simoes hurled a complete game, allowing only three hits and one run over the final eight
innings, to pace the Framingham Orioles to a 7-3 win over the Marlborough Indians at Merloni Field.
Mark Knowlton and John Malone had two hits each for the Orioles, and Aubrey Doyle added a hit and
2 RBIs to pace the O’s attack.
The Indians got off to a strong start with two runs in the first. RBI hits by Dave Prybyla and Tom
Pare were the big blows. But when Prybyla was gunned out at home trying to score from first on
Pare’s one-out double – pulling up with a tweaked hamstring just as the throw arrived – the rally
fizzled.
The O’s scored a run in the bottom of the inning off Indians starter Jeff Stiles. Dave Bieksha’s
two-out single drive home Simoes, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
The homestanding Orioles took control with a four-run second. Knowlton, Doyle, Malone, and Carlo
and Bobby Galvani all had singles in the inning. The damage could have been worse, but Pare threw
a laser from centerfield to nab Carlo Galvani trying to score on a Dean Bennett fly out.
The Indians closed to within 5-3 in the fifth on a Pare double and a two-out single by Mike Togneri.
Bobby Galvani singled to lead off the sixth and later stole home on a double steal for the Orioles’
sixth run. And Tommy Galvani led off the seventh reaching on an error, moved to second on a Knowlton
infield hit, to third on a Barry Bennett sacrifice, and scored on a Doyle ground out.
Prybyla lightened the Indians load with some early-game relief. Shrugging off a couple of leg
injuries and other assorted discomforts, Prybyla tossed the final six innings for the Indians
(2-5). He allowed two unearned runs and four hits, striking out three.

Phillies 9 Indians 2 and Phillies 3 Indians 2
The Medway Phillies stunned the Marlborough Indians with a walk-off 3-2 win in the nightcap to
sweep the teams’ doubleheader at soggy Bauks Field in Marlborough.
Game 1
Phillies 9, Indians 2
In the opener, Phillies hurler Jamie Nix scattered 10 hits and worked out of several jams to record
the complete-game win.
The Phils blew open a tight, 2-1 game with a four-run fourth against Indians starter Jeff Stiles.
Connolly’s two-out, two-run triple was the big blow as Medway took a 6-1 lead. All four runs in the
inning were unearned.
The Indians left seven men on base and ran into several outs on the base paths. Markian “Doctor of
Ticology” Stecyk ripped two hits for the Tribe (3-for-3 on the day), and Larry “The Long Goodbye”
Rosoff and Prybyla also had two hits each.
Jack “Hollywood” Buchanan pitched the final two innings for the Indians, who fell to 2-4.
Game 2
Phillies 3, Indians 2
Mark Rogers – a thorn in the Indians’ side all day – hit a gapper to right-centerfield to plate
Brian Gibbons with the game-winner with two down in the bottom of the seventh inning as the
Phillies improved to 6-1. Indians’ starter Dave Prybyla had retired the first two batters in the
seventh easily before Gibbons popped a single into no-man’s land in short centerfield. He stole
second and scored the game-winner without a throw.
Rogers was two-for-three in the nightcap and five-for-six overall.
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Will Goulant doubled and scored on a Dave DeVellis double.
The Tribe tied it in the second on a Prybyla single followed by Tom Pare’s double. The Indians took
their first lead of the day in the fourth when Jerry Guerra doubled, moved to third on a grounder to
short and scored on one-year veteran Dave Laliberte’s sacrifice fly.
Medway tied it in the sixth as Rogers led off with a single. Pinch runner Mike Connolly went to
second on Tim Corning’s single, stole third, and scored on Rick Huckins’ sacrifice fly. That set
up Rogers’ heroics in the seventh.
Huckins went the distance for the Phils, yielding six hits and retiring 11 of the final 12 Indians
he faced. He struck out one, but walked none.
Prybyla was equally strong for the Indians, allowing seven hits and striking out eight.

Week 5, 05/21/06 Double Headers
Cardinals 15 Yankees 0 and Cardinals 16 Yankees 3 Game 1
Starting Cardinal Pitcher Tom Langmeyer (2-3 hitting) cruised through five innings allowing
no runs on five hits to give the Cardinals a five inning shutout win upping his record to 2-0.
Cardinals had very balanced attack with everyone scoring at least one run.
Game 2
Starting Cardinal Pitcher Jeremy Ames went five to earn his first Metrowest ABL win in his first
appearance. Matt Finnegan finished allowing no runs on two hits with three Ks.
Quote of the day: Cardinal, John Neusch "I'd like to see Barry Bonds hit hung-over like the
Babe used to. That's the sign of a ball-player." Let's all hope that Hank Aaron's record
remains unstained.
Indians 12 Brewers 8 and Indians 15 Brewers 2
The Marlborough Indians broke into the win column with a doubleheader sweep over the Wayland
Brewers at Wayland High.
Game 1
Jack Buchanan (1-0) earned the win in Game One as the Indians held on for a 12-8 victory. Buchanan
scattered 14 hits, allowed six earned runs, and gained five MPH on his fastball after taking a line
drive off his pitching palm in the fourth. Mike Richards came in and struck out the only batter he
faced for the save.
When he wasn’t regaling his teammates with detailed recollections of extra base hits from the
1990s, Hugh Cornwell was bashing the ball. He and Dave Prylyba each had two hits and two RBI to
pace the Tribe attack in the opener. The Indians jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first
and added three runs in the second, fueled by a Mike Giordano two-run single.
Lionel Hamilton and John Pavia had two hits each for the Brewers, who had the tying run on deck when
the game ended.
Game 2
In Game Two, a trio of Indians’ pitchers shut down the formidable Wayland attack in a 15-2 win.
Jeff Stiles (1-1) was dominant on the hill, cutting his ERA by two-thirds (almost back to single
digits) with four innings of scoreless, one-hit work. In two innings of relief, Richards allowed
two runs and three hits, striking out three and hitting a batter (not counting teammate Larry
Rosoff, but that’s another story). George Silvia worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh
to close it out.
The first inning was good to the Tribe once again, as they put six runs on the board. In the game,
Prylyba, Giordano, Silvia (four RBIs), and Craig Macauley had two hits each for the Indians. The
bad news for Giordano is that he broke about 17 bats in seven plate appearances on the day, including
a priceless heirloom he borrowed from Cornwell that (rumor has it) Mickey Mantle used to hit his
500th home run. The good news is that the Indians have a more than adequate supply of wood for
their next pre-game bonfire.
A scary moment occurred in the fifth when Indians rookie Prylyba jammed his ankle on a pickoff
attempt at second base. Dr. Prylyba successfully repaired the ligament using tape, pine tar and
sunflower seed shells before being helped off the field. His self-prognosis is for a full recovery.
Wedding crashers Tom Pare and Dave Laliberte missed the affair entirely.
The Brewers’ Mike Maclean, who had two hits in the opener, added a double and a walk in the nightcap.
With the wins, the Indians improved to 2-2, one game behind the American League-leading Orioles.

Orioles 10 Red Sox 4
Duplicating what Orioles starter Sean O'Connor did to the Mariners the previous week, Steve Simoes
did to the Red Sox on Sunday - shut down their powerful batting order as The Framingham Orioles
posted their second win of the season, 10 to 4.
In 7 innings, the Red Sox could only manage 2 hits and 1 run off the Orioles' starter. Simoes also
contributed to the offense with 2 hits in three tries and a run scored.
Other Orioles hitting stars included Dave "boomer" Bieksha, 2-3 including a 300 foot triple;
Mark Knowlton 2-3, 2 rbi; Jeff Merzel 1-2, 2 rbi, 2 runs and Dean Bennett 1(ahem)-1, 3 runs
scored.
Cardinals 5 Indians 4
Former Cardinals Manager, Trey Garvin's wisdom continues to haunt these hallowed matches.
"Walks kill." At least that's what we think he was mumbling at 10:00 pm in the good ol' days when
a 9:00 am game saw most of us getting home around midnight.
But I digress. The Cardinals put down a ninth Inning Indian uprising (sorry, very un-pc, I know)
to preserve a 5-4 victory at Bauks Field in Marlborough. Starting pitchers, Cardinal Tom Langmeyer
(Complete Game Win, 8 Ks, 1 BB) and Tribesman George Silvia (6 innings no runs, 2Ks, 4 BBs) were
throwing shutouts until the last of the fifth when Indian Jerry Guerra, singled, advanced on a
cavalcade of FCs and scored on a two out error to make it 1-0 Indians after five.
All quite until the top of the eighth when Cardinals Ray Sullivan (0-1, 2 BB), Matt Finnegan
(0-1, 2 BB), and Matt Sandock (1-2, 1 BB), graciously accepted walks as a precursor to Randy
Pina's (1-3) RBI Single. John Masiello walked, Pat Pisano reached on a Bases Loaded FC and an
error, and John Neusch (NEUSCH!) (1-2, and a BB), singled to drive in the two Italian kids (figure
it out). 5-1 Card's after 8 1/2.
Langmeyer cruised in the bottom of the eighth. Card's went down in order to start the ninth.
Bottom of the ninth, hark the war drums. Jeff Stiles (2-3) started the Indians' rally with a
two out double. Dave Prylyba singled him to third and both runners scored on a gap double by Mike
"Gio" Giordano. A Tom Pare (2-3 with a double) RBI single made it 5-4. Cardinals Catcher, Matt
Sandock and Langmeyer finally got the signals straight. Hugh Cornwell then swung at Tom Langmeyer's
first offering and hit a towering fly to center, but the Cards' defense was playing deep and Pisano
snared the game-ender.
Quote of the day: Tom Langmeyer at the 8 2/3 Inning mark. "That was my slider. No, I thought
(?) fingers meant slider, (?) fingers meant curve and (?) meant change-up. You thought the whole
game that that was my curve? Geez, this is a little bit insulting."

Starting Cardinal Pitcher Matt Finnegan (1-0, 5 runs 1 earned, 5ks 3 BB) went three innings to get
the win. Tom Langmeier (0-0, 5 inning save, 1 earned run, 10ks, no BB) went long relief through the
eighth and was spotted in the ninth by John Neusch, who allowed no runs and no hits. Randy
"Big Stick" Pina went 4-4 with a double leading the Cardinals offense.
Beware the next Pitcher who faces Brewer's John Pavia. Three at bats went single, double, triple.
Paul Wood drove in 2 going 1-1 with a SAC and a BB.
Cardinals had a very balanced attack scoring in five of eight innings and getting RBIs or Runs
from all but two of the fourteen lineup positions. For those who saw new Cardinal Jeremy Ames
celebrate his baptism to the league by slamming into his right fielder in a shot the likes of
which are normally reserved for the NFL, Jeremy is ok, and will live to play another day.
