Recap Nationals 15, Americans 12
The National League scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good vs. the American
League in the 7th Annual MetroWest League All-Star Game played Sunday, Sept. 16 in Ashland.
The A.L. lent valiant chase throughout the later innings, concluding with three runs in the ninth.
But they ultimately fell short by a score of 15-12.
It had been a long time between games for most of the All-Stars. Play on both sides was crisp as a
wet noodle. But no matter. The sky was blue, the day was warm, and there was one more ballgame to
enjoy.
Longtime Hudson Cardinals coach John Masiello -- retiring after more than a decade in the league --
took advantage of the day to say goodbye in a truly memorable way. He struck out three times
swinging.
"He will be missed," said opposing pitcher Steve Saraceno of the Ashland Red Sox, marking up a K
in his scorebook. "I offered to groove one so Mazz could hit a home run in his last at-bat. But
he said, how would that be different from any other time I pitched to him?"
Taking up the offensive slack for the National League were a slew of bashers led by Mark Rogers of
the Medway Phillies (3-for-3, double) and Roberto Valentin of the Cardinals (2-for-3, double).
Also prominent for the N.L. were Wayland Brewers Steve Darrah (2-for-4, double) and Cort
Montross (2-for-3), Millis Brave Raul Matos (2-for-3), Vagabond Dodgers Vladislav
Zilberman (2-for-2, two walks) and Dave Christian (2-for-3), and Southboro Cub Tommy Barnes (2-for-3).
Barnes pitched well despite some un-All-Star calibre support to get the win. Sudbury Tiger Mitch
Williams took the loss for the Americans, who weren't exactly Brooks Robinson in the field themselves.
Offensive standouts for the A.L. included Marlboro Indians Mike Giordano (2-for-3, triple, walk) and
Markian Stecyk (2-for-3, sac fly), Holliston Mariner Don Sepulveda (2-for-4), Sudbury Tiger Chris
Parlante (on base all 4 times), and newly re-crowned Ashland Red Sox champions Brian
Farrell (2-for-3, double) and Steve Southard (2-for-3, walk, K to end the game).
Medway Phillies pitcher and National League manager Rick Huckins shook hands with American League
manager Saraceno after the game.
"You look around at the eyes of these All-Stars and you can tell they're just dazzled to be here,"
said Saraceno. "Or maybe it's the hangovers."
