As 9 Red Sox 8 and As 10 Red Sox 4 Game #1: A's 9 - Red Sox 8
Tom McCabe began the steamy day by mowing down the first 5 Sox batters he faced and keeping them scoreless
until the 3rd inning. The A's wasted no time at all scoring 3 runs in the first and 1 in the second behind
the lead off hitting of Brian Waldman (3 for 4, 2 runs) and Mike "Zee" Zogalis (2 for 4, 2 runs). Mike
"Sauce" Donfrancesco (3 for 3, 2 runs, 3 RBIs) drove in his first of three runs of the game. In the 2nd
inning, Freddy "Boom Boom" Boehm (2 for 3, 1 run) smashed a double to center and was driven in by Tori
Marrama's (1 for 3, 1 RBI) single. But the Sox came right back with 4 runs in the 3rd despite (RF) Tori's
web gem, when he took away a bloop single from Steve "Sara" Saraceno (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) and then doubled up
Jim Gavagan (1 for 2) who couldn't get back to 2nd in time. The 1-2-3 punch of speedster Paul Murphy (1
for 2, 2 runs, 1 double), Chris Parlante (1 for 3, 2 RBIs), and the big bat of Brent McKenzie (1 for 3,
double, 1 RBI) provided the firepower to drive in Chris "CC" Cronin and Scott Van Raalten - 4 to 4. In the
bottom of the 3rd, Tom McCabe (2 for 4, triple, 1 RBI) helped himself by blasting a triple to right and
driving in "Zee". Then Sauce followed with a double driving in Tom. A's back on top 6-4. The 4th inning
was a pitcher's duel. In the top of the 5th, the A's stopped another threat when Zee hit Sauce on the cut
off who in turn threw a perfect strike to Voges to slap the tag on Jim Gavagan trying to reach home. The
A's added 2 more in the 5th when the always dangerous bat of Steve "Southy" Southard (1 for 2, 2 RBIs)
drove in Waldman and Sauce - 8 to 4. The Sox get one back in the 6th when Murph scored after reaching
on error. But in the top of the 7th, the Sox came back again. Steve Triveri walked and then later
scored when Bobby Modica reached on an error. CC walked before Sara and his hot bat drove in 2 runs
on a single to tie the game at 8 to 8. The A's knew this game would not be easy. Waldman led off
with a single to left. Tom, who did not want to have to pitch another inning, smoked a one hopper to right
for a ground rule double keeping the go ahead run at 3rd base. Music please… Sauce steps into the dusty
batter's box. Sara focused… Brent calls the pitch… Sauce swings for the fence and missed the off speed
pitch - strike 1… Sara had fooled his former team mate… Sauce steps out with a grin on his face… knowing
the crafty veteran got one by him… and saying to himself "not going to happen again 3 times"… Here's the
pitch… Crack!! Sauce blasts a walk off single to win the game 9 to 8!!
Game 2: As 10 - Sox 4
No Surprise, Sara, the crafty veteran with the rubber arm, takes the mound for game 2. Sauce (2 for 4,
double, 2 runs, 1 RBI) picks up right where he left off by doubling in Brian Waldman then scoring on an
error. In the 2nd inning, Steve Halzel (2 for 4, 2 REs, 2 runs) scored when Voges (3 for 4, 2 doubles,
1 RBI) blasted a double to left. Tom pitched the 1st 3 innings and allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits. At
the end of 3 innings, the A's lead the Sox 3-1. In the 4th, Voges drove in Freddy (2 for 4) and Tori
(1 for 4) drove in Sean Potter, which turned out to be the winning run. Freddy took the mound in 4th,
whiffed 2 and got the 3rd to ground out to 3rd base. In the top of the 5th, Zee (2 for 4, 1 run, 2 SB)
reached on error. Sauce singled. With the temperature rising and the heat blaring (inside of) Southy (1
for 3, 1 run), he blasted another double to drive in 2 more runs and help build up a lead 9 to 1 lead
before succumbing to heat exhaustion. Feeling charitable in the bottom of the 5th, the A's helped the
Sox with 3 unearned runs. Sauce came on to close the game by pitching 2 scoreless innings giving up only
1 hit. In the top of the 7th, for good measure, Voges blasted his second double driving in the final run
and sweeping the Sox with a 10 to 4 win.
