MetroWest ABL Rules

We will continue to use the rules from last season which include National MSBL rules despite the fact that we are not in MSBL anymore. These rules are too large to post to this site. If you would like to get a copy of the rules, contact your Manager. All team Managers have a copy of the rules.

The MetroWest ABL amendments to the National MSBL rules are listed below.

1. MSBL Rule 1.c as Amended - Each home team, (Unless a double-header or playoff game), shall bring enough baseballs to complete the scheduled game. Only balls provided by the League will be permitted.
2. MSBL Rule 1.d as Amended - Only wooden bats are allowed.
3. MSBL Rule 3.a as Amended - A player is eligible to participate in an official League sanctioned game if they will be 30 years of age at any time during the calendar year of the present season.
4. MSBL Rule 3.b as Amended - At every game each Manager will fill out and sign two League game rosters, one for himself and one for the opposing Manager. It is each Manager's responsibility to make sure all of his players are listed on the game rosters and that he recognizes all players listed for the opposing team. It is also each Manager's responsibility to get the game roster to the League President by mail or in hand delivery. The game roster must be received from each Manager before the following Sunday or no players will be credited with having played that week. No exceptions. The Rule on faxing the game rosters is as follows:
a) Game rosters may be faxed, provided it is before the following Sunday, (that means by Saturday at 11:59 PM). The original must still be mailed.
b) The League President will make all final decisions regarding eligible game rosters. All players must appear in 50% of the team's games to be eligible for the playoffs. The 50% is rounded up so if a teams plays either 15 or 16 games, a player must play in 8 games to be eligible to play and pitch in the playoffs. A game appearance is satisfied by a player taking one at-bat. Also, each team is allowed to pick 2 players as "exemptions". These two players can not be changed from round to round. They must be selected before the playoffs start and stay the same until the playoffs end. These "exemption" players must play in at least 4 games and can NOT pitch in the playoffs. Note Rule 9.e.
c) The open roster rule closes as of August 1. That means any player that has not appeared on a previous roster is ineligible to play for the remainder of the season. As of the 2004 season, this rule has been removed. Rosters are open for the entire regular season as of 2004.
5. MSBL Rule 3.d as Amended - All players bat. This eliminates the possibility of any pinch-hitters.
6. MSBL Rule 3.e as Amended - The only time a Manager can add batters is if a player arrives at a game late. Any player arriving after the start of the first pitch, (after the starting line-ups have been made), is added to the end of the batting order as soon as he reports to the bench.
7. MSBL Rule 3.f as Amended - If a player is ejected from a game an out is recorded every time his spot comes up in the batting order. If a player leaves the game for any reason except an injury, an out is recorded every time his spot comes up in the batting order. If a Manager informs the opposing Manager before the game starts that one of his players has to leave the game early the preceding sentence will not apply and no out will be recorded when the departing player's spot comes up in the batting order. This rule is subject to change at any time should any Managers decide to abuse this benefit.
8. MSBL Rule 3.g as Amended - We will not implement the A/B batting order mentioned by this rule. All players that show will bat every time through the order.
9. MSBL Rule 3.k as Amended - Teams must have at least 16 players on their opening day roster.
10. MSBL Rule 5.a as Amended - If courtesy runners are used, then the last batted out will be designated as the courtesy runner unless the last batted out was made by the catcher, in which case the second to last batted out will be the courtesy runner.
11. MSBL Rule 9.e as Amended - In order for a player to qualify and participate in the League playoffs, he must participate in 50% of the players team's regular season games. By participate it is meant the player gets at least two at bats. In order for a player to qualify as a pitcher he must get 2 at bats in at least 50% of the regular season games. The 2 at bat rule is only applied if the players arrives late to a game or leaves early. If a player is at an entire game but only gets one at bat, the game still counts for playoff eligibility.

MetroWest ABL Specific Rules
1. If a Manager is playing a defensive position, he is allowed one trip to the mound to confer with his pitcher. Any subsequent trips will be counted as "official trips".
2. Pinch runners - Each team may pinch run for any player three times in any game at any time, provided that the pinch runner used is not the same player. If a pinch runner turn at bat comes up and the pinch runner is still on base an out will be recorded. (Unless another pinch runner is used, if one is available).
3. If any team forfeits a game for any reason, they shall pay the League $50 before the next game. If the League fine is not paid before the next game that team will be ineligible to record a win and no player on that team will be recorded with having played any future games until the fine is paid.
4. If teams are tied at the end of the regular season, here are the tie-breaker rules:
  • Head to head record
  • Best record within division
  • Most runs scored
  • Coin flip
5. Not that this should EVER happen in our league, but if a player is caught with a corked bat he will be immediately ejected from the game. The player will also have to serve a one game suspension.
6. All Managers are urged to re-read the MSBL Rules as Amended because all rules will be adhered to.
